PANJIM: Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu on Sunday stated that the electrification of railway lines in India would be doubled from the current 42 percent in the next five years.
“This year we have done a commendable job, we have done record electrification, new line laying, doubling and fitting of bio-toilets. Only 42 percent of the railways lines in the country are electrified and in the next five years this will be doubled. From barring narrow gauge to meter gauge, everything will be electrified” said Suresh Prabhu while addressing the people after launching various new facilities for the Konkan Railways in the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka through video conferencing from Goa
“Almost in a few years’ time all the railways lines in the country will be electrified and that will benefit in terms of saving cost and also for smooth flow of railway traffic” said Prabhu.
He further said that the Union Government has taken up doubling of tracks on priority. Only 16 percent of the network in the county handles 60 percent of the entire traffic and due to this majority of the trains get delayed and it becomes difficult for the railway’s to add new trains on these routes.
