MARGAO: PETA India has hailed the government’s decision to cancel its proposed plan to restart Dhrios.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, PETA recalled that in December 2015, the Goa Legislative Assembly issued a public notice seeking comments/representations from stakeholders/NGOs/individuals/institutions on restarting the already banned bullfights — locally known as ‘Dhirio’.
PETA India immediately shot off letters to the governor, chief minister, leader of opposition and the deputy speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly pointing out that this public notice contradicts the judgement of the Supreme Court of India dated May 7, 2014 which confirmed a ban on the use of bulls in bullfights, bull races, jallikattu and other performances as well as the order of Bombay High Court which banned bullfights.
