PANJIM: In a bid to ascertain the financial position of credit societies in the State, the government has announced an audit of all financial institutions in the co-operative sector.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told media persons that the move is to ensure that people’s money is protected.
“The general scenario of financial institutions in the co-operative sector is not very comfortable. Many credit societies are in the red or moving around red. There are several allegations,” he said. “Government is not interested in interfering in the functioning but will follow law strictly and ensure that people’s money is protected,” Parrikar said announcing a special audit of these financial institutions.
He said a team of chartered accountants would be appointed to undertake revisions of all activities of societies.
Speaking on the recent controversy surrounding the elections of Goa Urban Co-operative Bank, Parrikar didn’t agree with the interim order of High Court restraining former Panjim MLA Sidharth Kuncalienker’s wife Sonia Kuncalienker and Prabhu Gaude from voting in the elections for the post of chairman and vice-chairman of the bank.
“We don’t agree with the court order. I don’t consider that as a correct decision because we have followed the procedure correctly. But that is a temporary decision and interim order,” he commented.
“Court has not quashed or cancelled the directorship of the two and hence they both continue to be directors, appointed by the government. They are only not allowed to participate in voting,” he stated.
