CANACONA: While the whole world travels on aesthetically designed high-tech bridges, Asali residents including school-going children still use a nylon rope to cross the Sacrewal rivulet to reach their destinations.
This practice of crossing the Sacrewal rivulet in Shristal,with the help of a nylon rope puts their life in peril but this practice is going on since centuries particularily during monsoon season, say the elderly villagers.
Kushita Veli speaking to Herald, said that this is dangerous and might lead to drowning particularly during heavy rain when the water flow is heavy.
She said children and women are at more risk while crossing the rivulet but till date no untoward incident has happened.
However the same may not be said now as school-going children sometimes risk their life and cross the rivulet in a hurry to reach their school on time.
The biggest fear always is getting washed away in the torrential currents, she added.
The PWD authorities who are incharge of internal roads, at the initiative of local MLA and Deputy Speaker Isidore Fernandes have done the estimates for this culvert but the file has got stuck up due to unavailability of a no objection certificate from one of the owner on one side of the river, said a source from PWD.
In such cases where people’s lives are in peril the government has to invoke emergency clause and build the culvert on priority before any untoward incident happens, said a high school going student from the area.
