MARGAO: A native of Madhya Pradesh, who was working as a construction labourer, was given a sound thrashing by irate Assolna villagers as they launched a massive manhunt to nab him in the wee hours of Friday.

The manhunt which began at around 3.30 am along with the Cuncolim police ended shortly at dawn when they nabbed the man after a hot chase in the fields near the Assolna-Cavelossim bridge, which is under construction.

The accused Shambu Yadav, who was handed over to the Cuncolim police, was later arrested under section 41 of the IPC.

The incident occurred at around 3.30 am when the accused, who was employed by a contractor at a construction site, entered a neighbouring house.

One of the inmates of the house spotted the accused moving with a torch and raised an alarm. As neighbours responded to the cries for help to nab the man, the entire locality, including women, launched a manhunt to him.

It was only at around 7 in the morning that the accused was found near the under-construction Assolna bridge trying to hoodwink the villagers by giving an impression that he was engaged as a labourer at the bridge construction site. He tried to make good his escape after other workers at the site claimed that the accused was not a part of the labourers, but was nabbed after a hot chase in the fields and handed over to the police.
