PORVORIM: Admitting indirectly that some Congress MLAs were yet to extend their support to him, GPCC President John Fernandes on Thursday made it clear that all party MLAs would have to cooperate with him to strengthen the Congress party.
“Most party MLAs are cooperating with me and the rest will fall in the line soon,” said Fernandes, when asked at a news conference if all party MLAs were cooperating with him.
Fernandes, who was in Mapusa to address a meeting of block presidents and district committee members, stated that the GPCC committee and party candidates for both Lok Sabha seats would be announced shortly. He added that efforts were on to persuade senior Congress persons, who had left the party, to return to the Congress.
Fernandes also admitted that the Congress could not win majority in the last assembly election “due to some mistakes committed by the party.”
“Those mistakes will not be repeated. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is aware of those mistakes and steps are being taken to avoid them,” he said.
Mapusa Block President Vijay Bhike alleged that the BJP had not undertaken any new project in Mapusa for the last two years.
“Whatever developmental works that are being carried out were proposed by the Congress government. Congress had submitted a memorandum to the chief minister about the development works to be undertaken in Mapusa. If they are not carried out by March, then the Congress will resort to agitation,” warmed Bhike.
North Goa District President Amarnath Panjiker said efforts are on to strengthen the party at the grass-root level. “The new Congress president will get all the support from the Congress workers in his endeavour,” said Panjiker.
