PONDA/VASCO: Road mishaps continued to claim lives in the New Year, as three persons died and one person was injured in two separate accidents at Dharbandora, and Sada-Vasco on Thursday.
Two truck drivers were crushed to death after both vehicles collided head on along the NH4A at Sateri-Shet, Dharbandora, at about 4.30 pm, disrupting traffic for nearly three hours.
According to Ponda Police, the empty truck (KA-25-B-1394), which was proceeding towards Ponda, collided head-on with oncoming truck carrying wooden chips (GA-05-T-7714).
Ponda Police has identified the deceased as Rohit Kadar (21) of Dandeli-Karnataka and Arif Subani (27) from Haveli-Curti, Ponda.
The impact of the accident was such that both the truck drivers were crushed inside the cabins and reportedly died on the spot. Ponda fire brigade personnel along with a private crane and local residents jointly helped to extricate the bodies from the ill-fated vehicles.
It is not yet clear whether there were any other occupants in both the trucks at the time of the accident. The accident also disrupted vehicular traffic along the National Highway 4A for nearly 3 hours.
In another accident at Rumdawado in Sada-Vasco, Laxman Kumbar along with his son Govind was proceeding on their scooter (GA-06-H-8270) from Vasco to Headland Sada when they were hit from behind by a jeep (GA-01-T-9595).
According to Mormugao Police, pillion rider, Laxman, fell off the scooter and banged his head against the jeep tyre.
Police said Govind also sustained injuries and both the father and son were rushed to GMC Hospital in Bambolim. However, Laxman died while undergoing medical treatment at GMC.
Mormugao Police arrested jeep driver Sandeep Laxman Mundkare for rash and negligent driving and PSI Shailesh Narvekar is investigating the case.
