St Cruz Club of Cavelossim rightfully crowned themselves champions, defeating Varca Sports Club 3-0 in the finals of Kingfisher Beach Football Challenge tournament, sponsored by Kingfisher at Colva beach on Sunday.
St Cruz took home Rs 15,000 and trophy, while runners-up Varca had to settle with Rs 10,000 and trophy.
The architect of St Cruz victory was Donald Roucha, who scored a brace to give his team a comfortable 2-0 lead at half time. Donald’s first goal came through a free kick giving the Varca goalkeeper no time to react. Donald made it 2-0 from a right corner kick, once again slotting home to the left of the rival goalkeeper.
The second half began with a flurry of goalmouth action, which saw Varca trying to reduce the margin but Shawn D’Costa from St Cruz scored one more goal to take a 3-0 lead 3-0.
Following prizes were awarded: Best goalkeeper of the tournament – Felix Fernandes; Highest goal scorer of the tournament – Donald Roucha (13 goals).
In another semi-final, Varca Sports Club scored a 3-1 win over Sao Minguel de Taleigao. The goals came from the boots of Carlos Fernandes 2 and Aliston 1.
Vivek B Singh, joint MD, Procam International was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Cherian Xavier, Kingfisher, UB Group, Hidayath Khan, Station Head-Big FM Goa and Savio Messias, Secretary, Goa Football Association.
