Three former chairpersons re-elected in Curchorem

Youngest wins in Vodlemol, reserved for OBC candidates; Minister claims support of 11

CURCHOREM: Three former chairpersons and four councillors of Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) got re-elected while one former chairperson and one councillor lost the election held on Sunday.

As per the final Result Sheet (Form XIV) issued by the Returning Officer and Quepem Deputy Collector Nilesh Dhaigodkar, the three former chairpersons of outgoing council namely Balkrishna Uttam Sinai Hodarkar (695) from Bebquegal ward, Vishwas Pandu Sawant (551) from Ghotmorad-Bansai ward and Jasmine Braganza (622) from Carriamoddi ward won the election by defeating their nearest rivals Chetan Anil Raikar, Baburao Shrikant Fotto Dessai and Siddhesh Vinayak Bhise with the margin of 572, 342 and 280 votes respectively.

It is learnt that seven candidates backed by local MLA and Power Minister Nilesh Cabral and 8 independent candidates won the election. However Cabral is claiming the support of 11 candidates.

Speaking to media persons Cabral said that except two all other seating councillors who have contested again are re-elected. 

“People are with BJP and with development and except two, all other councillors who have contested again are re-elected. We will train the new elected councillors and continue the development activities in the respective wards,” said Cabral and informed that chairperson post will be decided after consulting our councillors.

Former councillors Tony Coutinho from Pongirwal ward (OBC), Sushant Rohidas Naik from Madhegal and Rhucha Subhash Vasta (Women OBC) and Aparna Vithoba Prabhu Dessai who changed her ward from Ghadiwada-Kakoda (Reserved for ST) to Sasnamoddi was re-elected by securing 290, 243, 515 and 340 votes by defeating Fernandes Denzil by 17 votes, Kishan alias Krishna Rajendra Sawant by slim margin of just 3 votes, Supriya Dnyaneshwar Naik by 130 votes and Jaya Anay Sawant by 32 votes respectively.

In Ward No 2, Khamamoll Damodar Narcinva Bhende (587) defeated former chairperson Felix Fernandes (413) by 174 votes and seating councillor Guna Naik Tulishidas lost by 115 votes to Pramod Damu Naik who polled 353 votes while his nearest rival candidate Maruthi Narayan Naik lost by 68 votes.

In the ward reserved for women OBC candidate Yolanda Pereira a new and youngest candidate among all won from Vodlemoll won by a margin of 161 votes defeating Gloria Judith Caitana Fernandes who got 299 votes. While in the a new created ward which was reserved for women another new face Reema Alise won by a margin of 61 votes (288 total) against Sangeeta Santosh Karmali.

Two more new faces Clementina Fernandes (402) from Morailem (OBC) defeated her nearest rival Jatin Ratnakar Salgaonkar by 114 votes while Pundalik Babai Ghadi lost to Mangaldas Arjun Ghadi (400) by a thin margin of 6 votes.

The former Chairperson, Pradip Kushali Naik, (345) who has retained this seat for the fifth time in a row by contesting third time (Twice by his wife Pradnya Naik) has defeated his rival candidate Jitendra Jaiwant Khandekar by 111 votes in Pontemol ward while at Bethmoddi ward Carmelina Morais (336) wife of former councillor Agostinho Fernandes won by 29 votes against Celina Piedade Mascarenhas.

Former Councillor and ex-president of Curchorem Congress Block Committee Manohar Naik said that the outcome of the municipal council is a reflection on the next Assembly elections in Curchorem.
