Singing about a decision that is nuts

Following the government’s declassification of Goa’s iconic coconut tree as a tree, many Goans have taken to social media to voice their displeasure. Some, such as artiste Friz Love, have even gone on to generate awareness about it through music. Café speaks to some of these voices and asks them for their take on the song as well as the string of events that has prompted its composition

Social media has in recent times been a medium for all crusades of the voice of the public. And this has been no different in the case of the most recent cause of outrage for the citizens of Goa. Notwithstanding the criticism and borderline abuse that has been hurled against it for its latest decision, the state government has introduced the Goa Preservation of Trees (amendment) Bill 2016, deleting the coconut tree from the purview of a ‘tree’ and classifying it as a ‘palm’. Amongst several other points of umbrage, taking the coconut tree out of the Preservation of Trees Act allows the bypassing of several acts, including the Town and Country Planning Act and also allows the felling of coconut trees without permission on private property.
Of course, like all things Goan, at some level, protests will be made musical and peaceful. A song, by artiste Friz Love, has been circulated in viral fashion on both, social media as well as instant messaging. Friz, who has always been outspoken in his causes that are pro-Goa, has taken it upon himself to spread awareness on the matter of the declassification of the tree. ‘Goa, save coconut tree, Goa, save your identity’ are the key lyrics that plead to the state, its machinery and its people; asking them to pay heed to the turning tide in the state.
