MARGAO: JMFC Court granted bail to Shekhar Gaonkar, the accused in the Benaulim identity forgery case. Shekhar has been asked to furnish a bond of Rs 10,000 and also report to the police station for the next seven days.
Gaonkar, an LDC of the Margao Municipality, has already resumed duty on Tuesday after he was granted bail.
Shekhar was arrested after he was found involved in the birth certificate scandal in the MMC. He is accused of conniving with his advocate wife to hatch the entire exercise.
Gaonkar had filed a bail application on Monday anticipating arrest and was granted bail on Tuesday.
Meanwhile Advocate Amey Prabhudessai, the lawyer of Shekhar, said: “We objected to the manner in which the police arrested him even after a ruling of the Supreme Court that it was required to send a notice and there was no need to arrest the accused.”
The Police now have a task in hand to find the actual nexus in the case as they have already hinted the involvement Shekar’s wife who is an advocate.
Sources suggest that the couple has strong political connections which are set to increase the difficulty level of the case.
