POINGUINIM: Frequent power failures have become the norm in Canacona, so say the locals. The Director of Education had recently instructed schools to watch the live telecast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech on the eve of Teacher’s Day. The schools complied, but missed the speech due to a power failure.
The power was restored at around 12 pm, but the telecast was over. The students and teachers wasted two hours idling before the dead television sets.
A school teacher informed that they had made elaborate arrangements, like bringing TV sets from their homes and getting a temporary cable connection. When the telecast was to begin in the morning, the power failed. Nobody in the electricity department was available to answer queries, she added.
Electricity department Executive Engineer Santosh Lolayekar stated that the department had undertaken a project to enhance the power supply system at many places in Canacona. He informed that old line-distribution transformers and supply-line conductors were being replaced, and that the enhancement of the power distribution line was long overdue. He added that the situation would improve and people needed to be patient.
Lolayekar further said that underground cabling work was going on at many places, and once it was completed, people would get uninterrupted power supply. He added that power supply would be disrupted only during routine maintenance works or if there was a problem with the main feeder lines that comes from Xeldem and Cuncolim onwards.
