PANJIM: The Judicial Magistrate First Class, Mapusa on Sunday granted six days police custody to swimming coach Surajit Ganguly who is arrested for allegedly raping a minor trainee.
Ganguly, who hails from West Bengal, was arrested by police on Friday, at Kashmiri Gate in New Delhi. He was flown to Goa on Saturday midnight and later taken to Mapusa Police Station, where the offence has been booked against him.
The accused was on run since the case was filed against him, initially in Rishra Police Station in Hoogly district of West Bengal, and was later transferred to Mapusa Police, since the incident took place here.
“In the morning, he was produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class, Mapusa for the remand. He has been remanded to six days police custody,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Gajanan Prabhudesai said.
The accused was earlier granted three-day transit remand by Tis Hajari Court in New Delhi.
The accused has been booked for rape under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 376 (rape), 354 (molestation) of Indian Penal Code, Sections 6 & 8 of POCSO and Section 8 of Goa Children’s Act.
The coach, who was on the run, was travelling through different States before being apprehended in New Delhi.
The complaint had mentioned that the incident had happened at Mapusa.
