MARGAO: A day after sex workers from the town held a protest at the Margao police station alleging that they were being harassed by the police staff, vendors from Margao went to the police station to file a complaint against the sex workers for harassing them and creating a nuisance in the area.

The vendors from the station road said that they are forced to shut their stores by 7 in the evening and that customers do not come to their side of the town as the place has become notorious due to the actions of the sex workers.
The vendors said they had filed a police complaint last month after the sex workers threatened the vendors and warned the vendors against complaining about them. The vendors alleged that the sex workers had threatened to vandalise their shops.
It may be recalled that a group of sex workers had on Friday protested at the Margao Police Station and alleged that they are being harassed by police staff.
The group ensured their voices were heard loud and clear by the police as well as the public when they accused some unnamed police staff of trying to extort money from them. They further alleged that the police staff demand sexual favours too.
The protesting sex workers denied allegations that they were involved in theft cases and stated that they have in fact helped the police department in the past to catch thieves.
The protestors also questioned the harassment meted out to them by the police and demanded that they be allowed to live in peace with dignity.
