PANJIM: In a first drug bust in any professional college, the Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) and Crime Branch (CB) sleuths arrested two students of Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi for alleged possession of narcotics.
The alleged drug-laced party in one of the boys’ hostels, where the teams conducted the raid early Friday, was attended by around 15 to 20 students and ex-students. However, ANC SP Kartik Kashyap said that only two – final year student Vishant Gawas and first year engineering course student Arun Singh Rathod – were caught in possession of the narcotic substance.
“The duo has been booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. The raid will send a strong message that Goa Police will not tolerate any such nefarious activity in Goa, more particularly in educational institutions,” he said.
The search, an officer said, was following several complaints from students and parents. “We verified the information before conducting the raid. Our officials were on the job for many days,” he said adding, “When our teams barged in the hostel’s two rooms, they saw the students were partying. On their personal search, the two students were found with the contraband substance and subsequently taken into custody.”
ANC is contemplating questioning other students and staff and also suspects that a kiosk-like structure around the campus is supplying drugs. Sources said a couple of ex-students have been seen in the area. “There is no proper security in the hostel as anyone can enter without being questioned or his identity verified,” he said.
