With reference to the report dated January 6, where the CM has promised that the proposed IT Habitat and Electronic City will generate at least 40,000 jobs, it is astounding how, despite such promises being made before, we continue to believe them. He promises 40,000 jobs? Of what kind? In what sphere of IT? And to be serviced by whom? Any employer will tell you that the level of freshers graduating from the many colleges in Goa, whether engineering or otherwise, are generally of an abysmally low quality that need more training and hand-holding to bring them up to scratch. Assuming that companies do set up shop here, will they hire these graduates? Or will they pay the salaries that experienced engineers have come to expect after working outside Goa? It is surprising how general statements are made while the details are conveniently ignored. The government would do well to encourage small IT shops rather than indulge in grandiose plans for IT Habitats that soon convert into barren wastelands.
