Call them pre-monsoon showers or otherwise, residents of Colva have had a bad beginning ahead of the monsoon, with parts of the village facing blackouts almost every day.
What has agitated the residents is the fact that it’s takes hours and hours for the Power Department to restore power supply in times of blackouts. They have demanded that the Power Department equip the Colva electricity office with adequate men and machinery to tackle the situation given the village status as a tourist destination.
Says social activist, Judith Almeida: “It appears Colva residents are heading for a big time problem with regard to power supply this monsoon. It is indeed said that the department does not even have adequate stock of low tension wires to carry out repairs in times of breakdowns. Colva is a coastal village and breakdowns are not uncommon, but the department should be equipped to tackle the situation head on”.
The residents had been complaining that it takes hours for the meagre staff to restore power supply and has called for urgent steps to beef up the electricity office with additional manpower and machinery.
