AGONDA: Fish vendors have been doing their business dangerously by the road side at Saleri, Khola putting lives of customers at risk. Locals have been demanding for a dedicated fish market for years.
An appeal regarding the same was presented to Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar and MLA Altone D’Costa. Taking note, D’Costa visited and inspected the area yesterday. The bridge on Saleri river is narrow which is where fisherwomen sit and sell their fish. A shed to mend fishing nets was built on the banks of the Saleri river but the demand for a fish market still remains a dream.

Realising the seriousness of the situation, Canacona police had written to Khola panchayat saying that in case of a mishap, the panchayat will be held responsible.
“Women doing business in this place are helpless. They do not have any other option. D’Costa visited the site on Monday and said that there are technical difficulties in building a fish market but 5 meters of space on both the side of the road belongs to the government and expressed the possibility of utilising it and said that a definite resolution will come out after discussing the issue with PWD Minister,” said Sunil Pagi, Chairman of Vitthal Rakhumai temple committee.
