Addressing on the occasion, Sinha stated that maritime sector has an important role to play in the national developmental strategy. “India has a coastline of more than 7,500 kms, with many major and minor ports. Maritime industry is a flourishing sphere of our national economy and it contributes significantly to the economic growth as well as employment,” she stated.
“There is considerable scope for the State of Goa for promotion of maritime activities, particularly tourism-related areas. We should explore the possibility of introducing new and attractive activities to boost maritime industry and tourism,” added Sinha.
Bhod Raj, chairman of the National Maritime Day Celebration Committee said on April 5, 1919, the first Indian Merchant Vessel with Indian flag sailed from Mumbai to United Kingdom, which is remembered as the Maritime Day.
On the occasion, Captain Hemant Bhangi, Captain Anil Panchawani, Joseph Morias, Deepak Shah and Stayaveer Singh of the maritime industry were awarded the lifetime achievement awards by Governor Sinha.
Others present were MPT Chairman Cyril George, Deputy Conservator of MPT S S Tripathi, Director of BITS Pilani Prof Sasikumar Punnekkat and Bodh Raj.
