SANGUEM: Queiroz Cruz was elected unopposed as new chairperson of Sanguem Municipal Council at the elections held on Wednesday in the SMC office.
Cruz was declared elected unopposed as the chairperson by the RO Rohit Kadam as there was no other nomination for the post.

The move to elect the new chairperson followed as former chairperson Romualdo Fernandes resigned from the post citing personal reasons after serving the council for 18 months.
All ten councillors along with Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar were present for the special meet.
Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar urged the councillors to remain united on all fronts and work for the development of all the wards in the municipal area.
Gaonkar appreciated the work done by the outgoing chairperson Romualdo Fernandes during his tenure.
He assured all support and co-operation to the Council in the development works. All the councillors congratulated Cruz for his appointment as the chairperson.
This is the second time that Queiroz will be holding the post of Chairperson during the current term which is set to expire in October.
Meanwhile, the weekly Wednesday market in Sanguem continued to remain closed. While most of the street vendors stayed away from the market, some who had made their presence in the market were directed not to open their shops as a precautionary measure to avoid spread of COVID-19.
It is pertinent to note here that earlier this month, the street vendors had made attempts to open their shops on the Wednesday market but were directed to close down their shops after the members of Sanguem Merchants’ Association urged the municipality to temporarily suspend the opening of the Wednesday market.
