VASCO: An NGO from Vasco has handed a representation to the Deputy Collector and Chief Officer of MMC reminding them of the dishonour of Mormugao Municipal Council resolution to stop the transportation of hazardous commercial transport through the town areas. The NGO, Goa First, has demanded that the MMC honours the above resolution taken a while back and stop the transport from the town areas.
Parshuram Sonurlekar of the NGO Goa First has written to the Deputy Collector Mahadev Arondekar and Chief Officer of Mormugao Municipal Council Agnelo Fernandes reminding him of the Mormugao Municipality resolution taken during the reign of former Chairperson Deepak Naik asking to stop hazardous cargo traffic through the town areas. “The transportation of the hazardous and unclean cargo through the town has resulted in lot of spillage, debris collection and dust polluting of the town. Accidents also are a sad outcome of this traffic,” said Parshuram.
In his letter to the Mormugao Municipal Council and the Deputy Collector he has demanded strict regulation of this traffic in form of in and out time, management of the cargo movement or else a complete ban on the entry of such cargo into the town to arrest the problems caused to the town.
The Deputy Collector Mahadev Arondekar has said, “The MMC has to implement the resolution if taken. Since it is addressed to me now I will tell the Traffic Cell and RTO to regulate the movement and control speed and other aspects”, said Deputy Collector while also committing to inform regarding the same to the Collector South.
The Chairperson of Mormugao Municipal Council, Kritesh Naik Gaonkar, while speaking on this issue said, “I haven’t been addressed regarding the same till date but for the betterment of the public we will take necessary actions”, said Kritesh. He also informed that the resolution was taken earlier during the Deepak Naik tenure at MMC and was forwarded to the Deputy Collector but there is no reply from the office he said.
Dust and nuisance for traffic due to the commercial transport, accidents and deaths due to these big vehicles on small roads has been a common scene for the town. Now, it is for the local elected Governments and representatives to decide how to go about the demand of the common man.
