PONDA: South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar has called for preserving the scenic beauty of Goa and maintaining cleanliness by every Goan for the State’s development. He stressed the need for creating awareness to make public places, city corners and road side garbage free.
Sawaikar appreciated the efforts of the group ‘People of Ponda’ for being perhaps the only organisation in Goa which has held consistent cleanliness drives and said that he is glad to be part of some of their cleanliness drives. He also said that Swacchata Abhiyan is a mission as expressed by Prime Minister on August 15, 2014 since garbage is a recurring issue and the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan should be a continuous process.
Sawaikar was speaking at function organized by ‘People Of Ponda’,(POP) a social organization striving towards making Ponda a better town, carrying out cleanliness drives aimed at creating awareness about keeping the city clean, every Sunday between 7am and 8.30 pm, for the past six months on the eve of its 25th ‘Swaccha Bharat – Nital Ponda Abhiyaan’.
MP, South Goa, Narendra Sawaikar who released a CD of People Of Ponda’s work, was the chief guest and Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar and Dr Radhika Nayak, chairperson PMC were the guests of honour.
Mamledar appreciated the efforts of POP in keeping Ponda clean and expressed full co-operation to them in their future endeavours
Dr Radhika Nayak, in her speech explained the initiative taken by PMC at garbage management and extended full cooperation to POP in all their initiatives.
Dr R C Dev presented a memento to Sawaikar for his active participation in most of the POP’s Swacchata Abhiyan. Four councillors of PMC — Shivanand Sawant, Geetali Talaulikar, Vincent Fernandes and Nidhi Mamledar, all of whom had participated in many of the drives conducted by POP were presented mementos by POP at the hands of Sawaikar. A memento was also presented to Kendriya Vidyalaya School, Curti, Ponda for associating with POP in some of the programmes
