PANJIM: The state executive of the Nationalist Congress Party, staged a protest march from their office to the Public Works Department Head Office against what they term ‘erratic water supply,’ which is giving ‘sleepless nights’ to housewives and is a burden to the Aam Aadmi.
“The frequent breakdown in water supply is unbearable to domestic consumers, in particular to housewives who very often have to pass sleepless nights to collect a few pots of water,” NCP President Nilkanth Halarnkar said in a statement after their protest.
Halarnkar said that the water problem was a yearly issue in places such as Kadamba Plateau and its surroundings areas such as Chimbel, Ribandar and Bainguinim and not just places such as Dabolim and Vasco which are usually the first victims of water problems.
Brian Pegado cited the issue of restricted water in St Andre constituency, which is represented by BJP.
The NCP office bearers also chose to hit at the government on water tariff hikes.
“The price rise in water tariff, particularly to non-domestic outlets is once again a burden to the ‘Aam Aadmi’ as all commercial establishments will pass on the cost. Some of the non-domestic/commercial consumers have ceased operations, thereby affecting production and also workers of these commercial establishments are laid off and denied livelihood,” Halarnkar said.
They have now demanded the immediate roll back the hike in tariff for water supply and sewerage charges, commissioning the underground water reservoir at Vasco,
speedy augmentation of Opa water supply system and commissioning of water reservoir of the “Project Improvement of Water Supply System to Kadamba Plateau Phase I, Bainguinim” and Immediate implementation of 10 MLD Water Treatment Plant at Maisal Dam Panchawadi, 25 MLD Water Treatment Plant at Ganjem/Usgao and 27 MLD Water Treatment Plant at Opa under JNNURM.
