Gandhi Market Shopkeepers Blame MMC for Flooding Due to Poor Drain Desilting

Shop owners at the bustling Gandhi Market in Margao have raised strong concerns against the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), alleging negligence in desilting the drainage system, which they say has caused severe flooding in the area.

According to Anil Kalekar, one of the affected shopkeepers, nearly 20 establishments in the Mandi Market section have been inundated with water since May 20. “We have been facing this issue for over a week now, and the authorities have done nothing to resolve it,” he said, expressing his frustration.

Traders claim repeated complaints have been ignored, and that the flooding has not only damaged goods but also affected footfall and daily business.

The shop owners are demanding immediate action from MMC to desilt and maintain the drainage system, especially with the monsoon approaching, warning that continued inaction could lead to more damage and potential health risks.
