MARGAO: There was a huge uproar in Colva on Friday after many residents complained that a surge of high voltage had short-circuited several of their electrical equipment. They have demanded compensation for the damages caused.
“Yesterday in Colva, one or two transformers sent in high load of electric current suddenly at night. A lot of peoples’ electrical appliances stopped working,” said a Colva resident, Neville D’Souza.
Other residents pointed out that their items ranging from television sets, refrigerators, air conditioners, cordless phones, tube lights, bulbs and fans were damaged.
While local MLA Caitu Silva had raised the issue in the assembly and pointed out that the streetlights were yet to be repaired, residents observed that this was not the first time such an incident had occurred in Colva, and pointed that surrounding areas like Majorda and Benaulim were also suffering from severe power fluctuations.
“I am not sure if underground cabling will solve the issue. If it will it needs to be done at the earliest,” added a resident.
Sources stated that work in that direction is expected to begin shortly.
“As we did not have electricity, we called the concerned office in the morning. They informed us that the problem occurred during the night at Sernabatim transformer. So they know about the incident,” added residents.
Electricity department officials said they were looking into the issue.
