The detailed project report (DPR) on the development of the age-old canal has also pointed out its poor condition, nonetheless with recommendations for improvement.
Continuous onslaught with un-mindful utilization as a dumping ground for garbage, discharge of sewage effluent and solid waste generated by the growing habitation along the stretch on both sides without any effective compatible service management, is just one of many problems, the report states.
Imbalanced surrounding eco system, absence of result oriented service management, absence of sewerage system to tackle the generated sewage and drainage from the surrounding inhabited areas, presence of non-biodegradable materials, and unplanned growth aggravating land erosion problem are among other pollution problems identified in the voluminous report.
The report importantly mentioned “Quantifying the environmental and health benefit is difficult because of the need for data to establish the magnitude of impact. At present the creek is subjected to a considerable amount of contamination and has become breeding ground for mosquito because of stagnant water and filths,” it says while speaking about improvement adding, “Diseases like malaria and other water borne diseases has routinely been reported from the project influence area. Thus the economic benefit of the proposed development includes reduction in household healthcare cost and reduction in man days lost because of these diseases.”
The report also mentions the need to improve the drainage condition of the creek ‘thus reducing the water logging problem in the project influence area surrounding the creek.’
