MARGAO: The war of attrition between Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai and Margao Municipal Council chairperson Dayanand Deulkar continued for the second day with the Independent MLA labelling him as a puppet in the hands of corrupt and defecting councillors.
Addressing the media, Vijai said that Deulkar is living on borrowed time in the council. ‘The chairperson has not honoured his promise to step down after completing his six-month tenure. Like his predecessor, he has not honoured his promise,” he added.
He recalled how the councillors had approved the municipal budget without discussions on burning issues such as outstanding recoveries and moping up additional revenue. “Instead, they only discussed issues pertaining to contractors’ bills”, he added.
Saying that the councillors had supported BJP candidate in the South Goa poll only for personal package, Vijai said that local leaders such as Bhai Naik should explain how the city has benefited with the ruling group extending support to the BJP on the eve of the Lok Sabha poll.
“The civic body has failed in tackling the garbage and plastic waste problems. There’s no awareness on mission rabies carried out to free the town from the stray dog menace,” he said, while giving a call to the people to elect new breed of leaders who will work for the city’s development. “We had held meeting at Sonsodo in the interest of the people. I am relieved that even councillors backed by me had gone to Parrikar”, he added.
The MMC chairperson, on the other hand, denied that he is surviving in the civic body on borrowed time.
