MARGAO: At a time when unemployment has become a burning issue in Goa, the Nagoa Village Panchayat, on completing 25 years of its formation, has launched an initiative called ‘Employment Bureau’, a village-level body that will ensure last-mile connectivity between employment seekers in the village and job avenues as well as handhold those who want to venture into their own businesses.
The panchayat will be the first in Goa to implement such an initiative.

As per the ‘Employment Bureau’ initiative planned by the panchayat, each villager seeking employment should submit his/her data to the panchayat. At the same time, those who want to start a new business, should put in their request before the panchayat, and thereafter the panchayat will search for jobs for them.
Nagoa, a small village with very few resources, developed its own mechanism to generate revenue.
This panchayat was first formed on November 15, 1996, by the Nagoa Citizens Committee. The panchayat has so far managed to generate Rs 10 crore of revenue.
Anzil Godinho, a panch, told Herald that they are here to do something good for the village and the villagers. “We are here to implement the ideas that are put forth, as we believe in the implementation of suggestions,” he said.
He said at the recently held gram sabha the issue of unemployment was discussed, wherein an employment committee was formed to deliberate on the issue.
“Yes, after collecting the required data-base, the bureau at the panchayat will come to know the job requirements and then the recruitment process will start at the panchayat level,” Godinho said.
Accordingly, the panchayat will send the proposals to different companies, mostly the companies operating at the Verna Industrial Estate.
“The panchayat will also come to know how many youth are unemployed and what type of jobs they are searching for,” he said.
That’s not all, the Nagoa panchayat will organise courses for all dropouts and these courses will not just be common ones but will help the youth to be self-employed.
Gabriel Fernandes, the Sarpanch, said, “This concept will surely help the youth from the village to seek employment.”
“Our aim is to help and encourage those who are unemployed so that they earn their livelihood. The Panchayat is ready to give all support to those seeking jobs, besides encouragement to start their own business in the village,” he added.
Earlier, the Nagoa panchayat had implemented an initiative using technology to keep track of its migrant population. The local body has worked out a way to take control of the issue with a migrant worker database through a specially-designed app to keep an up-to-date digital record of the same.
