MARGAO: The Goa Municipal Employees’ Association (GMEA) on Monday threatened to strike work if the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) failed to credit the salaries of the staff and other workers by October 5.

It is pertinent to note that that civic body is yet to pay the salaries due to shortfalls in the financial crisis.
Anil Shirodkar, General Secretary of GMEA, said they held a meeting to deliberate on the issue on Monday at Margao, and decided to stop work if salary is not paid by Tuesday. MMC chairperson Lyndon Pereira said the salaries will be credited by October 7.
The civic body is facing a tough time in paying the salaries of the staff and other workers on account of the financial crisis. MMC has already initiated the recovery drive for the last many days. The civic body is under pressure to break the fixed deposits.
Union leader Anil said they are waiting till October 5 for the salaries.
“At the meeting, we have already decided to stop work if MMC salaries are not paid at the earliest. We will appeal to the staff and workers not to work”, he said.
Several staff and other workers expected that their salaries would be credited by Monday evening, but the same got delayed.
“We are still without salaries. There is no positive reply from the Accounts Section on the issue. We heard that officials are not ready to break the fixed deposits to pay our salaries”, said one of the staff.
On the other hand, the chairperson said they are working out the solution to pay the salaries.
“We are yet to recover the dues from the defaulters to pay the salaries. Teams are already on the field for the recovery. However, workers will get their salary by October 7, as per the law”, he added.
