MARGAO: The Nagoa gram sabha still stands behind its May resolution and will continue to oppose the garbage management plant proposed in the Verna Industrial Estate, said John Philip Pereira, a Nagoa local.

He said that the Nagao village panchayat already has a functioning garbage management system in place. “The minutes of the gram sabha held in May this year, containing our resolution objecting to the proposed waste management plant were read and confirmed at this gram sabha,” he added.
Besides setting up a system of development of the village in an orderly and sustainable manner, the Nagoa panchayat believes that it should also endeavour to build a strong base of informed villagers, by inculcating a capacity for them to understand and analyse government policies, and their implications for the State and the village.
“Hence, regarding the contentious jetty policy, it was decided that the resolution opposing it should be taken by an informed gram sabha. With this in mind, it was decided that an expert on this issue should be brought in to explain to the villagers the serious ramifications of this policy on Goa as a whole, and on our village and its people. An informed, educated and knowledgeable gram sabha can then take the resolution from a position of strength,” said Pereira.
