GSPCB is the nodal agency for collecting waste from industrial units through its solid waste management cell (SWMC). During the meeting, the industrial units pointed out that the SWMC of GSPCB does not collect solid waste, leading to pile up of industrial waste on site.
“We informed industrial representatives that the waste was not collected, as in most cases the waste consists of bio-medical, industrial and also hazardous waste,” GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said after the meeting.
Industry players had two suggestions – monthly collection of waste from every industrial unit, so that identification of those involved in hazardous waste production becomes evident and taking on board all the scrap dealers in the State to collect industrial scrap and pass on all the non-recyclable scrap to GSPCB.
“We found the solution to collect waste from industry to industry as logical and also viable. Hence we might consider it,” Noronha said adding that the final decision would be taken only after consulting the GSPCB Member Secretary Levinson Martins.
In the past, many notices had been issued to several industrial units for dumping their non-recyclable waste without segregating it. “We only take non-recyclable waste to send it for incineration to Vasavadutta Cement factory in Karnataka, which includes plastic below 40 microns,” Noronha said, adding other categories of waste will have to be disposed of by the industrial units scientifically.
