CANACONA: A holiday for three young couples from Navi Mumbai took a tragic turn barely a day after they arrived in the State, when a 24-year-old male from the group died and his partner was grievously injured after their rented bike hit a bus on the national highway at Gulem-Canacona late Friday evening.
Traffic was also disrupted for nearly two hours on account of the mishap.
Even as the investigation was underway, police identified the deceased as Abhijeet Dhiwan from Nerul in Navi-Mumbai, while the grievously injured woman was identified as Seema Bhonsle.
Bhonsle was shifted to Hospicio in Margao in an unconscious state by a 108 ambulance.
An inconsolable woman from the group informed Herald that they had arrived in North Goa from Nerul, Navi-Mumbai, on Thursday, and they had visited Palolem on three rented motorcycles on Friday morning.
The three couples, who were travelling in three different rented motorcycles from North Goa were reportedly returning to Calangute after spending the day at Palolem beach. Abhijeet and Seema were reportedly riding ahead, followed by the other two couples.
After negotiating a turn at Gulem near Bhumipurush temple, the motorcycle hit the oncoming bus (GA-10-T-3636) while reportedly trying to overtake a vehicle.
The impact was such that Abhijeet’s head hit the bus head lamp and he sustained grievous head injuries.
With a traffic jam and heavy crowd assembling at the accident site, a foreign national tried in vain to revive Abhijeet, before the 108 ambulance took Abhijeet to the Canacona Health Centre, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Traffic was stranded for nearly two hours, before police conducted the panchanama and both vehicles were moved from the site. Canacona police is investigating the case.
