VASCO: Ripples of the landslide victory of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi were also felt in the port town, with people attributing BJP’s defeat to their arrogance and overconfidence in the polls.
While people from the port town were glued to their TV sets right from Tuesday morning, taxi drivers and other passers by were seen patiently watching the news on TV at the Sai Baba Temple, Vasco.
No sooner had AAP’s lead touched 60 seats, some taxi drivers and other passers by began celebrating
AAP’s victory by bursting fire crackers.
Market vendors also celebrated the victory by bursting crackers along the roadside near MMC market.
Speaking to Herald, some taxi drivers said the arrogance and over-confidence of BJP had led to its downfall.
“The BJP had failed to curb rapes and discrimination of minorities in Delhi due to which they are reduced to single-digit seats in the Delhi Assembly. People had lost faith in the party and this was shown by the people of Delhi by electing AAP with a thumping majority,” said Pradeep Naik.
Vincillin Mendes said BJP was overconfident after the Lok Sabha elections, which made them arrogant.
“Character assassination of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, arrogance and overconfidence had led to BJP’s downfall,” Mendes said.
Former customs commissioner Apericio Pereira said he was forced to vote for the BJP as the Congress had failed to deliver.
“After getting elected in the State and the Centre, the BJP felt that they are invincible and can win in every state assembly elections. The overconfidence and autocratic attitude of most BJP MPs and rise in communal activities led to their defeat,” said Pereira.
“Unlike the BJP, AAP was very decent in its campaign and they kept their developmental plans before the people of Delhi. This gave them a landslide victory,” added Pereira.
Adv T T Shreedharan, an AAP leader from Vasco, said the Delhi assembly elections were not a victory for the AAP, but for the common man, who had suffered under the Congress and BJP regimes.
“While BJP was involved in character assassination of our leader Kejriwal, AAP provided a vision of better living to the voters of Delhi. Though we got elected
with a thumping majority, we will fulfill
the promises made to
the people of Delhi,” added Adv Shreedharan.
