PORVORIM: Just as Goa Police were trumpeting claims of zero accidents around New Year, ironically its own driver Sripad Teli embarrassed the force by crashing the police patrol jeep into a fastfood centre at Verem on New Year’s morning.

Not only was the police driver, Sripad Teli, found drunk on duty, he was arrested on charges of driving in a rash manner and was later placed under suspension on Wednesday.

In a police complaint, Micheal Barreto stated that Teli, who hails from Khaznem-Pernem, was reversing the jeep (GA-07-G-0258) near Vailankanni store and fast food centre at Verem, when the vehicle damaged the compound wall and roof of fast food centre at about 1 am on January 1.

Besides damaging property, Teli was also accused of endangering life at the site.

Acting on the complaint, Porvorim police conducted investigations and found that the driver had also damaged one scooter and a cycle.

Teli was later sent to the Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim for a medical examination, where it was confirmed that he was found drunk on duty.

Porvorim police booked a case under Sections 279, 336 IPC and Section 185 (drunken driving) against Teli.

He was arrested and later produced before the Mapusa Judicial Magistrate First Class, before he was released on bail. Teli was later placed under suspension by the Superintendent of Police (PCR) on charges of driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Police Inspector Rahul Parab is investigating the case.
