MARGAO: Dependent on the person delivering fish at your doorstep on a two-wheeler fitted with a box? Be ready to visit the market to meet your daily need as the Transport Department officials have been directed to take action against these illegal fish vendors.
Acting on complaint by a former Raia sarpanch, Director of Transport Nikhil Desai has issued a memorandum to the Assistant Director of Transport at Margao to take immediate action against illegal fish sale and file a compliance report within 15 days.
What is pertinent to note is that in April, former Raia sarpanch Xavier Fernandes had brought to the notice of the Director of Transport the fact that fish sellers, who are not traditional fishermen, have fitted huge boxes to their motorcycles in which they stock fish, which is then sold to the households in the villages.
Furnishing photographs, he said such vehicles can be found daily around 6.30 am to 8 am at the wholesale fish market in Margao and informed that there are at least 200 vehicles in the market involved in this illegal practice.
Xavier through photographs pointed out that while most of the two wheelers are registered with the Transport Department of Goa, there are quite a number of the two-wheelers registered with the Karnataka government thereby establishing that this is an illegal trade being carried out by people including non-Goans.

Incidentally, while in the morning there are quite a number of motorcycle or scooter owners, who go around selling fish in the evening. There are some vehicles that move around in the villages selling bread.
