MARGAO: Giving its go ahead signal to the Margao Municipal Council to go for door-to-door waste collection via outsourcing, the High-Powered Committee headed by Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar on Monday constituted a three-member sub-committee headed by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat to take the proposal to its logical conclusion.
The committee also reviewed the Sonsodo capping proposal and it was decided that the Margao civic body should immediately send the proposal to the government for technical and financial sanction after receiving a revised report from the Kerala-based consultant Gopalkrishnan.
On the door-to-door waste management proposal, the High-Powered Committee gave its green signal and has asked the sub-committee to make the recommendations at the earliest for implementation. Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and Margao Municipal Chairperson Arthur D’Silva are the other two members on the sub-committee.
The High-Powered Committee members were unanimous that the Margao civic body should go for door-to-door waste collection. A suggestion was made that the civic body should levy fees on the commercial establishments for collecting door-to-door waste and that the government should subsidize waste collection from residential houses by giving a grant.
Sources said the High Powered Committee members felt that door-to-door waste collection is the need of the hour and all efforts should be made to implement the concept in the commercial capital at the earliest. The High- Powered Committee which agreed in principle to fund the Sonsodo capping project reviewed the situation.
The Committee maintained that the civic body should immediately move for technical and financial approval from the government once it receives the report from the consultant.
