KRC appraised of threat to tracks at Areal
HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, APRIL 15
The Navelim Civic and Consumer Forum has asked the Managing Director of Konkan Railway Corporation to take cognizance to the serious threat posed to railway tracks and tunnel at Sao Jose de Areal.
The Forum drew the attention of the KRC to the illegal basalt mining carried out around the railway tracks between Margao and Balli railway station. It was pointed out that the process of mining is carried out by heavy explosives causing damage to the neighbouring houses.
Coordinator of the Forum Sidharth Karapurkar feared that a lot of damage might have been caused to the railway tracks. He expressed shock to know that the miners have not even spared the hill directly above the tunnel and raised doubts whether the tunnel can survive if the illegal activity continues unabated.
The Forum pointed out that the Konkan Railway has been a very ambitious project and built with an important purpose of connecting the South of India with the North. The NGO said these are marvels of civil engineering designs which are used in this railway project to build via-ducts, tunnels, bridges etc that has shown the world how India can take up very challenging projects.
