PANJIM: The Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) successfully conducted the 1st Athletics awareness program, at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School (OLPSHS), here, recently.
In all, 130 athletes from Cortalim mainly OLPSHS, Shantadurga HS, Blessed Joseph Vaz HS, Government HS, Vidhya Vihar HS participated.
The half day event was divided into two sessions, practical field and theory. The athletes were segregated into groups of runners, jumpers and throwers. The coaches thereafter separately carried out sessions for the young aspiring athletes in the respective events.
Sprinters were imparted knowledge on proper warm and stretching, sprint exercises, track specifications, fixing of starting blocks before the races, starts, running arm action, striding, finishing techniques and a lot more.
The jumpers were thought the various specific jump techniques, jumping exercises, runway marking methods, take off, landing while the throwers were shown various warm up throw exercises, to hold the shot put, discuss, javelin, circle, runway and sector specifications, flight of implement, throwing techniques etc.
The athletes were also educated on the scope in making a career in sports.
Priya Dhume, assistant dietician of SAG then conducted a talk on nutrition in sports for the players. A few motivational sports videos of some great athletes were also shown to the players which immensely motivated them.
The program was carried out under the supervision of Bruno Coutinho, Joint Director -Coaching SAG and coordinated by Steffi Cardozo, Assistant Project Officer (Athletics) and Rajesh Naonoskar (PE teacher of OLPSHS).
