MARGAO: Marina English High School, Verna prevailed over Our Lady of Rosary HS, Fatorda 5-3 via the tie-breaker to storm into the semi-finals of Fr Peter SVD memorial football tournament, organized by SVD Seminary, at SVD Seminary ground, Raia, Sunday.
Both the teams were off to a promising note and started creating chances for their side. In the 14th minute, Frazer Miranda finally broke the deadlock with a beautiful chip over the rival custodian Preston Rego to give Our Lady of Rosary HS the lead.
Stunned by the early goal, Marina English HS started creating opportunities but the rival defenders kept them at bay. The score was 1-0 at halftime.
Changing over, Marina English HS almost got the equaliser but Savio D’Souza’s shot was beautifully saved by Karol Soares. Our Lady of Rosary HS tried hard for their second goal but were denied by the rival defence. Cristo Fernandes finally got the equaliser after he slotted home from the penalty spot.
In the tie-breaker, Cristo Fernandes, Recilio De Souza, Savio D’Souza and Braven Abranches were on target for Marina English HS. For Our Lady of Rosary HS, Arvind Silva and Cavin Araujo converted whereas Karol Soares and Rahul Fernandes missed out.
The chief guest for the match was Joseph Gonsalves. Joseph is a good friend of the SVD house and also a benefactor.
The next quarter-final will be played between Deepvihar HS, Vasco and St. Thereza HS, Canacona, on Monday, at 4 p.m.
