PORVORIM: The State government has spent a whopping Rs 450 crore on infrastructure for the National Games, which currently stands postponed in view of COVID-19 pandemic.

The Minister for Sports Manohar Ajgaonkar told the House that of the total amount spent by the government on creation of the infrastructure, Rs 121.80 crore are sanctioned and released by the Central government.
The facilities include state-of-the-art hockey facility at Peddem sports complex, athletics stadium at Bambolim, multipurpose sports hall at Goa University and Peddem, 400M Synthetic Athletic Track, Upgradating & Refurbishment of Fatorda and Tilak stadium and various football grounds, indoor stadium at Navelim and Sawalwadda- Pernem, Lawn Tennis Courts, baseball field, among others.
Ajgaonkar said that the State Government was awarded the National Game hosting rights in 2008 for the 36th edition to be hosted in 2011.
The Minister said that the 36th edition of the National Games was scheduled to be hosted in October, 2020. “However, on account of the Covid19 pandemic, the National Games have been postponed in consultation with the Union Sports Ministry and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA),” he said.
Ajgoankar said that the fresh dates for hosting the National Games will be worked out in consultation with the IOA and the Union Sports Ministry.
