PANJIM: The Goenchea Kul Mundkaracho Awaz Association (GKMAA) on Wednesday highlighted their demands to scrap the amendments to the Goa Mundkar Act.
Speaking to media persons at Panjim’s Azad Maidan, association convenor Ramkrishnan Jalmi said their protests have been ongoing for over a year to no avail. “We have been saying for over a year that the government is turning into one for the corporates and not for the people. They are only giving land to builders,” he said. He said that since the first meeting in Keri, the group has been traveling to other parts of the State to highlight how the government has made life for the mundkars difficult. Jalmi pointed to how changing the authority handling mundkarial cases has also created problems. “According to the amendment, we have to approach the court and give the required documents to prove that we are mundkars.
The issue is such that while we have toiled on the land, we have had no hard copies or documents of any sort to prove that we are mundkars. They refuse to acknowledge it if our names are on the Form I & XIV,” he said. In addition to the scraping of all amendments to the law they have asked that an index be made to ascertain the number of mundkars.
