PANJIM: It is a great irony that police who are supposed to keep law and order and fight crime are themselves found indulging in crime. The recent incident of four policemen suspended appears to be a major embarrassment for the police. Herald Media asked them for their reaction on the fact that instead of cracking down on drugs, police are smuggling drugs in Colvale jail.

The Goa police department is responsible for this. They should have posted honest policemen to the Colvale jail, then this smuggling of drugs would not have happened. It appears they don’t have fear, because they have godfathers. Their posting itself has been done by the godfathers. The sincere officer suffer. Action should be taken against those who have smuggled drugs and they should be dismissed. They cannot be reformed, if they are transferred, they will ply their trade elsewhere. Inspite of good salaries, they want to make fast money. Since there are less jail guards, police are sent there. Guarding and searching is done by the police. So they have to send honest officers.

The Colvale jail is an entertainment centre, a place to have fun and enjoy yourself, eating and drinking what you want. The police and those incharge looks like they are there for time pass. So many times they have found mobiles, drugs etc in the jail. Illicit activities take place there and so many police have been suspended. But what is the end result. Colvale jail is an entertainment hall. If they police are suspended (for smuggling drugs) will they be reformed? Once the North Goa collector found 40 to 50 mobiles at Colvale jail. But again mobiles are circulating there. Suppose jail authorities are asked, they say how are they supposed to stay there, they also want entertainment. If they want time pass, they should not commit murder, rapes and thefts.

Those who are suspended are constables, but the actual investigation should happen against their bosses. How did smuggling of drug take place in the jail. Is the jail not supposed to be secure? There are four security gates with cameras. We cant say to what level this has reached. These police are arrested and they are let go. Those arrested in the job scam are today enjoying at home. We cannot rejoice because they are arrested, they get jail and they are enjoying at home. Nothing is secure today. Drugs are available in Panjim city as well.
