MAPUSA: Dempo Sports Club on Wednesday completed the signing of Australian striker Tolgay Ozbey from Kolkota’s Mohammedan Sporting Club which will keep him at The Golden Eagles for the remainder of the season.
With the release of Englishman Billy Mehmet, Tolgay’s signing comes at the right time for the club, ahead of the Federation Cup.
Arthur Papas, head coach of Dempo SC was delighted with the new signing and is likely to sign one more player in the coming days. “Yes there will be new signings, today we finalized the signing of Tolgay Ozbey and will be looking to add one more player in the near future.” said the Australian tactician.
The 27-year-old, Tolgay played an important role in the Black and Whites’ winning the Durand Cup but thereafter he wasn’t able to replicate the same form in the I-League. Tolgay has spent three-and-half years in the City of Joy and is amongst the few foreigners who have donned colours for all three Kolkata’s giants namely Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and his previous club Mohammedan Sporting Club, which released him on mutual understanding. Tolgay admires his countrymen Papas very much which is one of the main reasons for his switch.
The former five-time National champions, Dempo SC are currently in the 10th position in the I-League, 14 points behind league leaders Bengaluru FC who have 30 points. However, Tolgay’s inclusion will certainly boost their chances in the Federation Cup and there on in the I-League once it resumes in February.
