MANDOPA: Salcete Football Club registered a solitary goal win over Churchill Brothers Sports Club in the Goa Football Association’s U-16 football league match, at Mandopa ground, on Tuesday.
Salcete FC scored the match-winner in the first session through Mark Carvalho.
They could have taken an early lead in the sixth minute itself but Flanton Dias squandered a golden opportunity by shooting wide.
At the other end, Churchill Brothers SC got into a rhythm but Girish Lamani shot straight into the hands of the rival custodian.
Subsequently, Mark’s header missed the target in the 20th minute off a cross from Akshay Gaude.
However, four minutes later, Mark broke the deadlock as he calmly controlled a cross from Flanton and unleashed a venomous strike from outside the 18-yard box.
In the 36th minute, Mark could have scored the second goal but his effort was blocked by a rival defender.
Change of ends saw Salcete FC dominate the proceedings through Mark and Flanton as the duo combined well to keep the rival defenders on their toes.
In the 49th minute, Flanton floated the ball to Mark but the threat was cleared to safety by Churchill Brothers SC substitute, Zayan Khan in the 52nd minute.
The Red Machines tried hard in search of the equalizer but were unfortunate as Haden Pinto’s header hit the goalpost and went out of play in the 57th minute.
In the dying minutes, Mark set up Destor Mateus in an ideal position but the latter shot straight into the hands of the rival goalkeeper.
