The stinking affairs at the Margao Municipal Council have disappointed many a concerned citizens. The civic body should be a place where people have a duty to find consensus, find a way out and work together and not have a duty to oppose. It is sad there is no formal mechanism to enforce discipline.
Those at the helm have succeeded in making a mockery of the system and the people. The only way to combat the incompetent system is to formalize the ability of citizens to come together to show the incompetent councillors and their masters the door in the 2015 civic polls.
There is a lot of inaction because nobody is pushing for a people’s agenda. It is time for an enthusiastic progressive group to come forward, identify and endorse capable candidates in every ward, who will work for the people against the corrupt practices of the council and their political masters. The objective should be to create a city-wide platform and run that platform so people know that when they vote for a candidate, the candidates stand for certain policies. The stress should be on specific issues rather than ideology.
