PONDA: Rejecting the no-confidence motion passed by 7-0 votes against Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) vice-chairperson Virendra Dhavalikar, Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) Gurudas Pilarnekar on Thursday said the motion stands defeated as it was not passed by an absolute majority.
Pilarnekar said, “The no-confidence motion is defeated as there was no clear majority while passing the motion. Hence Dhavalikar will continue as vice-chairperson.”
It is pertinent to note that in the 15-member council an absolute majority of eight members is needed to get the no-confidence motion passed.
It may be recalled that last week eight councillors had moved a no confidence motion against Dhavalikar and it came for discussion on October 11. Only seven councillors were present for the meeting, who passed the no confidence motion by 7-0 votes. However, confusion prevailed as the outcome of the meeting was not declared by presiding officer Shantaram Colvekar, who is also the PMC chairperson.
Following this confusion, chief officer Ajay Gaude and Colvekar sent the minutes of meeting to the DMA to decide whether the motion passed against Dhavalikar was valid or fizzled out.
