The arrival of Cyclone Phet in the Arabian Sea has delayed the monsoon rains in Goa. However, the Met department expects a normal monsoon with more than 98 per cent showers.
Indian Meteorological Observatory in-charge K V Singh said that the monsoon arrival in Goa has been delayed due to the depression in the Arabian Sea.
“We were expecting showers in Goa before the actual season as it had already set in Kerala on May 31. Now after this low pressure belt, the monsoon currents have begun to develop along Karnataka and Goa,” Singh said.
“Monsoon may advance to Goa by Saturday,” he added.
The Met department had earlier predicted that the south-west monsoon for Goa would arrive by first week of June.
Meanwhile, he said that the department is expecting a normal monsoon this year. “Looking at the circumstances, we predict a normal monsoon, which will benefit the agriculture sector,” Singh stated.
