At the Council meeting held on Tuesday, none of the councillors raised any objection to the involvement of the private trust in door-to-door waste collection. On the contrary, the City Fathers, who attended today’s meeting gave their nod for the draft MoU which the civic body would enter with the Self Help Groups and the private Trust for door-to-door waste collection.
MMC Chief Officer Narayan Sawant said not a single councillor raised any objection to the private trust, adding that he would examine whether bids were required to be floated by the civic body before engaging the trust or the self help groups.
“Right now, we felt that there was no need to float a tender since the Trust will carry out the work in only one ward and that too on trial basis for four months. Floating the bids will come into play if the Trust wants to expand in other wards,” Sawant said.
Incidentally, Ward No 2 Councillor Damu Shirodkar expressed his total satisfaction over the door-to-door waste collection carried out by the private Trust. He said the Trust will work as per the modalities laid down by the Council, including levying of fees on the households for waste collection.
Meanwhile, DMA Elvis Gomes said he would seek comments on the reports that the Margao Civic body would on the decision to rope in a private trust for door to door waste collection. “I will comment on the matter only after I receive a report from the Civic body,” Gomes added.
