Minor boys kidnapped
MARGAO: A mother of a minor victim girl complained that on January 19 between 3.30 pm and 5.45pm at Saishwar-Raia, some unknown accused person/s kidnapped her minor grandson, aged 16 years. Maina-Curtorim police have registered an offence under section 363 of IPC and section 8 of Goa Children’s Act 2003. PSI Pradeep Velip is investigating. In another case, on a complaint filed by Raju Bhat, a labourer residing at Ambaji, Fatorda, Margao police have registered an offence under section 363 of IPC and section 8 of Goa Children’s Act against unknown culprit/culprits for kidnapping the nine-year-old son of the complainant. According to sources at Margao police, on January 20 Bhat complained that on January 17 at 4 pm at Ambaji unknown accused kidnapped his son from his lawful guardianship.
Couple’s anticipatory bail rejected
MARGAO: South Goa district and sessions judge Nutan Sardessai has dismissed the anticipatory bail application moved by a couple from Vaddem, Vasco, who are accused of committing offence under sections 448, 392, 384, 506(ii) read with 34 of IPC. Public prosecutor Subash Dessai argued before the court that thorough custodial interrogation of the accused was essential to find the whereabouts and details of suspects who are absconding.
Toddler abandoned at Hospicio
MARGAO: Medical officer at Hospicio Margao Dr Sheral Egipsy filed a complaint with the Margao police that on January 20 at 10.45 am, an unknown lady being the guardian of a one-and-half-year-old girl child left her at Hospicio with the intention of abandoning her and disappeared. An offence under section 8 (ii) of Goa Children’s Act has been filed against the unknown lady by the police and the minor girl has been referred to Goa Medical College Hospital, Bambolim, for medical assistance by the medical officer of Hospicio. Further investigation in the case is being conducted by PSI Girendra J Naik.
3 held in drive against handcarts
MARGAO: Margao police have commenced drive against hand carts causing danger, inconvenience and obstruction to free movement of vehicular traffic and pedestrians.
On January 20 three persons were arrested in this connection. Police gave their names as Mohammad Jaffar Khan and Molaly both from Housing Board, Gogol and Raju Gulal from Fatorda.
PWD tender scam case against Churchill: Srivastava asked to clarify
PANJIM: The CID/Crime Branch on Wednesday issued a letter to Delhi Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava asking his version about allegation of corruption in the Rs 300 crore PWD tender scam case registered against former PWD Minister Churchill Alemao.
The letter was issued based on a complaint by National Students Union of India (NSUI) Vice President Sunil Kawthankar alleging that Srivastava, during his tenure as the Goa Chief Secretary, had not taken action into his complaint against the former PWD minister of cheating the government by illegally awarding 258 tenders in works division of XXV (roads) alone, each of which cost Rs five lakh or more.
The CB has now sought a clarification from Srivastava asking why he did not act on the complaint.
2 held for TN native’s murder
PORVORIM: Mapusa Police on Wednesday arrested two youth in connection with the murder of a Tamil Nadu native at Acoi-Mapusa.
According to Mapusa Police, accused Chandan Pawar and Pritesh Talauliker on January 19 allegedly assaulted Govindraj following an argument between them at Acoi. Govindraj was rushed with serious injuries to Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim and breathed his last on Wednesday afternoon. Mapusa Police arrested Pawar and Talauliker and is investigating the case.
Tejpal provided with blindfold
PANJIM: Tehelka founder editor Tarun Tejpal has been provided with a blindfold to ‘peacefully sleep’ during the nights in the Sada Sub-Jail where he is currently lodged in an alleged sexual assault case.
“He complained to jail authorities and police escort that he was not able to get sound sleep because the lights in the jail are not switched off during the night. This is the reason he was given the blindfold to shut out lights,” a jail official said requesting anonymity.
Interestingly, other cell inmates with whom he is sharing Cell 14, have not been given the same treatment, but forced to sleep in the same uncomfortable condition.
Male body found at Pedem
PORVORIM: An unidentified male body was found in a temporary erected hut near Sports Complex at Pedem-Mapusa on Tuesday.
According to Mapusa Police, the deceased is suspected to be about 60 years old and the body is preserved at GMC at Bambolim. PSI R A Kalangutkar is investigating the case.
Handbag snatched at Calangute
CALANGUTE: Two persons on a scooter snatched a handbag containing gold ornaments, mobile phone and other items, worth Rs 25,000, at Titawaddo-Calangute.
According to Calangute Police, Trevor John Benneth, British national, complained that the scooter rider and the pillion rider snatched his wife’s handbag containing one gold ring, one mobile phone, etc, all worth Rs 25,000 and fled from the spot. PSI Shrikant Pednekar is investigating the case.
Mobile phone, cash stolen at Baina
VASCO: Mobile phone, cash and other items worth Rs 13,000 were stolen at Valmiki building, Baina.
According to Vasco Police, K Bharathraj of Hyderabad complained that some persons stole his mobile phone, wallet containing cash of Rs 5,000, driving licence and debit card, all worth Rs 13,000. Head Constable S R Rahul is investigating the case.
Sanguem resident injured in mishap
OLD GOA: A resident of Sanguem was injured in a road accident at Mix & Fix Steelyard at St Cruz junction.
According to Old Goa Police, Gitesh Gaonkar of Karmone-Sanguem complained that a car (GA-03-H-7151) dashed his motorcycle (GA-09-F-5507) causing injuries to his leg and hand. Head Constable Mahesh Gawde is investigating the case.
Duo held for gas cylinder theft
BICHOLIM: Bicholim Police on Wednesday arrested two persons from Mapusa on charges of stealing a gas cylinder from Maulinguem-Bicholim.
According to police, Chandran Adelkar from Duler-Mapusa and Akshay Bhike from Gausawada-Mapusa approached Sham Gaonkar from Maulinguem and asked for vehicle oil. However, when Sham went inside the house to get it, the duo decamped with the empty gas cylinder which was kept in the veranda.
Acting on a tip-off, Bicholim Police arrested Adelkar and Bhike from Gausawada Mapusa and also seized two motorcycles. The accused have been remanded to seven days police custody.
Fr Agnelo anniversary observed
TIVIM: Hundreds of people participate in religious services to mark the 145th birth anniversary of Venerable Fr Agnelo at Anjuna on Wednesday.
In his homily during the mass, Auxiliary Bishop of Mumbai Domnic Savio Fernandes described Ven Fr Agnelo as a true disciple of God who saw the Creator in fellow human beings and was truly concerned towards them.
“We are proud that Fr Agnelo, a son of this village, has been declared Venerable and could soon become a saint,” informed Bishop Fernandes.
In his brief message to the people after the Eucharistic celebration, Bishop Fernandes called on the people to preserve and protect Anjuna village.
“The greatest miracle will be if the whole of Anjuna lives the way Fr Agnelo showed and lived,” he said.
Earlier, St Michael Church Anjuna Parish Priest Fr Thomas Gonsalves welcomed the bishop and the gathering. A large number of priests, including Pilar Society Superior General Fr Francis Carvalho, Pilar Fathers Provincial Superior Fr Kyriel D’Souza, Fr Anisio Motta from the Don Bosco Institute at Parra and other priests took part in the Eucharistic celebration.
Rohan Khaunte conferred award
PORVORIM: The Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad Foundation has conferred the Adarsh Yuva Vidhayak Purasker-2013 on Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte for his significant contribution to Indian democracy.
The Puraskar, which carries a citation, shawl and trophy, was presented to Khaunte by former BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Venkaiah Naidu at the 4th Indian Student Parliament, an annual three-day conclave of student union leaders from all states at Pune.
Khaunte is one of the 16 young MLAs selected from various states for their contribution to Indian democracy.
Speaking on the occasion, Khaunte appealed to the youth to enter politics with dedication to weed out corruption from public life and to make India a super power.

Statisticians meet in Goa
NEW DELHI: The central and State government statisticians will meet for a two-day brainstorming session in Panjim from Thursday on coordination to ensure their figures are most reliable.
The conference is being organised jointly by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) and the Goa government and will be attended by central and State statistical organisations.
The agenda includes labour and employment statistics, annual surveys of service and industries and generation of the local-level statistics to be used in the state and national level projections.

UTAA voices fears over certificates
PONDA: Criticising recent claims by a minister that ST Community certificates could be issued at the panchayat level in Ponda Taluka, the United Tribal Association Alliance (UTAA) has feared that such a move could lead to bogus entries.
Addressing a news conference in the city on Tuesday, the Ponda taluka members of the UTAA have raised fears of bogus entries if caste certificates are issued at panchayats.
At present, the caste certificates are issued at the office of the deputy collector.
“After furnishing all the certificates, the caste certificate is issued by the office of the deputy collector. However, if the certificates are issued at panchayats then there is every possibility of bogus entries. This should not happen,” stated Ponda Taluka in-charge (UTAA) Vishwas Gaude.
