CANACONA: Most of the fasteners (hooks) used to hold the sheets of the KTC bus stand roof in Canacona are totally rusted.
And an upward thrust of heavy wind can blow off the sheets anytime, endangering the life of the commuters, complain the locals.
The bus stand was built in 2004 at a cost of Rs 3.12 crore. Even though the project designed as a wave supported by columns and trusses was undertaken by Goa State Infrastructure Development under strict quality control parameters. The actual quality of the work got exposed, the locals alleged.
“And even before it could complete 15 years, most of the around 10,000 zinc coated self tapping fasteners have rusted and the sheets are left with no support at many places,” complained Vishant Prabhu, a social activist from Canacona.
Many elders still recollect former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar during the inaugural function saying that a fund being set aside for the maintenance and repairs of the bus stand whenever required.
The KTC staffers deputed at the bus stand say sometimes they have to pay from their own pockets for doing petty maintenance.
“Already many sheets have blown off and fortunately it didn’t land in the premises of the bus stand. The authorities have to repair the bus stand before it’s too late,” emphasised Ajay Bhagat, who is a former chairperson of Canacona Municipal Council.
